What is Psychiatry:

Psychiatry is the division of medicine concentrated on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. Specialty in psychiatry can be traced to Ancient India. The oldest texts on psychiatry include the Ayurvedic text, Charaka Samhita. Some of the first hospitals for curing mental illness were established during the 3rd century BCE.

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (an M.D. or D.O.) who specializes in mental health. Psychiatrists are proficient to assess both the mental and physical aspects of psychological problems.

People may utilize psychiatric help for many various problems, sudden (panic attack, frightening hallucinations, thoughts of suicide and ...) and long-term disorders (feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or anxiousness).

These can make you feel your life is out of control and you can do nothing to change it.

For diagnosis, psychiatrists can order a variety of laboratory and psychological tests which help them for right treatment decisions. Psychiatrists are physicians so they can order any medication patients need. Their educational knowledge may help them to understand the relationship between emotional and other medical diseases. They should study a patient's history very accurately cause researches have shown a close relation between emotional and psychological problems with genetics, familial history, drug history, and ...

These days they use specific criteria for diagnosis which is called the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders(DSM-5), which contains descriptions, symptoms, and other criteria for diagnosing mental disorders.

 DSM5 categories:

 • Neurodevelopmental disorders.

 • Schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders.

 • Bipolar and related disorders.

 • Depressive disorders.

 • Anxiety disorders.

 • Obsessive-compulsive and related disorders.

 • Trauma- and stressor-related disorders.

 • Dissociative disorders.

 What Treatments Do Psychiatrists Use?

Psychiatrists order diversity of treatments–including different types of psychotherapy, medications, psychosocial interventions, and other treatments (such as electroconvulsive therapy or ECT), depending on whatever a patient needs.

Psychotherapy, sometimes called talking therapy, is a treatment that includes a talking relationship between a therapist and a patient.

Nowadays psychotherapy is used for treating a broad variety of emotional and mental difficulties. Psychotherapist aims to annihilate or monitor the troubling symptoms which reduced the patient's function. The number of sessions depends on the extent of the problems, it may be few sessions or long terms of sessions during years. Psychotherapy can be done individually, as a couple, with a family, or in a group.

Most medications that psychiatrists used to cure patients will cause a high chance to get high blood pressure or diabetes. Because of these side effects, patients should be monitoring all the time and they shouldn't consume their prescription without a Psychiatrists idea. Patients on long-term medication treatment will need to meet with their psychiatrist periodically to monitor the effectiveness of the medication and any potential side effects.

 Class of Medications :

 • Antidepressants – used to treat depression, panic disorder, PTSD, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, borderline personality disorder, and eating disorders.

 • Antipsychotic medications – used to treat psychotic symptoms (delusions and hallucinations), schizophrenia, bipolar disorder.

 • Sedatives and anxiolytics – used to treat anxiety and insomnia.

 • Hypnotics – used to induce and maintain sleep.

 • Mood stabilizers – used to treat bipolar disorder.

 • Stimulants – used to treat ADHD.

What Is the Difference Between a Psychiatrist and a Psychologist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (completed medical school and residency) with special training in psychiatry. A psychiatrist can conduct psychotherapy and order a variety of medications and other medical treatments.

A psychologist usually has an advanced degree, most regularly in psychological clinics, and often has extensive training in research or clinical practice. Psychologists treat mental disorders with psychotherapy and some specialize in psychological testing and evaluation.

Over 450 million people suffer from mental and emotional disorders. According to WHO, by the year 2020, depression will constitute the second largest disease burden worldwide. The global burden of mental health will be well beyond the treatment capacities of developed and developing countries. Mental Health is linked to behavior and seen as fundamental to physical health and quality of life. Although no one can evaluate the importance of mental health, everyone knows that it affects all parts of life so people should care about it as same as their physical health.
