Steps of the breast lift surgery

Step 1

Anesthesia:

During the surgical procedure, you will be given medications for your comfort. Various techniques are accustomed to providing anesthesia during breast surgery. The alternatives include intravenous sedation and general anesthesia. You’ll likely receive general anesthesia.

Depending on the surgery, your medical record, and preferences, in addition to the advice of your surgeon and anesthesiologist, there are various options.

Step 2

The incision:

It will be necessary to make incisions in your breasts to elevate them to their ideal position, which will result in scars. While these scars are covered behind a bra, many patients want to know exactly what their scar will look like. After all, your scar will be visible in some situations.

There are four common incision patterns:

The Anchor lift (the incision which is located around the areola):

If you have a lot of sagging in your breasts, your doctor is likely to recommend the anchor incision for your  breast lift. This type of incision consists of three incisions: one around the areola, a horizontal incision at the base of the breast crease, and a vertical incision linking the areola and breast crease incisions. The scar that results will resemble an upside-down "T" or an anchor. This form of incision is especially beneficial for women who want to get a breast lift and a breast reduction at the same time.

The Lollipop Lift (vertical lift):

If you just have moderate breast sagging, an incision as invasive as the anchor incision is generally unnecessary. Many patients with moderate sagging can benefit from a lollipop lift instead of a breast lift, according to doctors. This type of breast lift requires making an incision around the areola, then from the base of the areola to the peak of the breast crease, directly down the breast, giving the appearance of a lollipop.

The Donut Lift (a circular incision around the areola):

Many women who have mild to moderate sagging choose the donut lift as a breast lift alternative. This is since the only incision made is around the areola. This incision type also allows for the placement of breast implants, thus patients can choose the breast lift incision type to combine a breast lift with a breast augmentation for a perkier, more juvenile breast appearance.

The Crescent Lift:

If you have a moderate amount of drooping in your breasts and are thinking about having a breast augmentation done at the same time, the crescent lift can be a good option for you. An incision is made along the upper half of the areola using this sort of incision. Because the incision is so small, the patient's breasts will have the least amount of scarring.

Which Type of Incision Is Best for Me?

Only a consultation with your doctor can establish which form of breast lift incision is best for your degree of sagging and surgical goals.

Step 3

Changing the shape of your breasts:

After your doctor makes the incisions:

To increase breast form and firmness, the underlying breast tissue is raised and reshaped.

The areola and nipple are relocated to a more youthful, natural height.

Enlarged areolas can be decreased by excising skin around the perimeter if necessary.

To compensate for a loss of elasticity, excess breast skin is removed.

Step 4

Closing the incisions:

The leftover skin is tightened as the wounds are closed after your breasts have been sculpted and extra skin removed.

Some breast lift incision lines are hidden by the natural breast shapes, while others are visible on the breast surface. The scars of incisions are permanent, but they will fade and get better over time in most circumstances.

Many women want their scars to be as little as possible. However, as previously said, your plastic surgeon will advise you on the incisions that are best suited to your anatomy.

Listen to your surgeon and don't risk your outcome by insisting on an incision that isn't right for you.

To form and sustain the newly shaped breasts, sutures are applied deep within the breast tissue. To close the skin, sutures, skin adhesives, and/or surgical tape may be applied.

Dos and Don'ts of Breast Lifting

After surgery, keep your supportive compression bra on until your plastic surgeon tells you to take it off. To reduce swelling, the support bra, which looks like an athletic bra, applies mild pressure to the healing breasts.

Follow your plastic surgeon's instructions for keeping your wounds clean, dry, and appropriately bandaged. To keep the incisions dry, you may need to skip washing and instead take sponge baths for a few days.

Make sure you take enough time off work to recover. Before returning to work, most women take nearly a week off.

As soon as you're ready, go for short, slow walks. Moving about can assist dissipate swelling and reducing the danger of blood clots.

To avoid swelling, restrict your salt consumption and drink plenty of water. Hydration is beneficial to your energy levels as well as reducing constipation following surgery.

Make sure you ask about scar management. Scar massage techniques or products may be recommended by your plastic surgeon to help speed up scar healing.

Sleeping on your stomach or sides puts too much strain on your recovering breasts, so avoid it. Sleep in a recliner or prop yourself up on pillows.

Lifting anything heavier than a gallon of milk (including your children) might create strain and swelling in your healing breasts. Similarly, avoid pushing anything heavy, such as a stroller or a large grocery cart.

After surgery, don't smoke because it can hinder your body's capacity to recuperate.

After surgery, avoid drinking alcohol for a few weeks because it can promote dehydration and fluid retention.

Don't be concerned if you go through a range of emotions during your recuperation. Many patients report experiencing "ups and downs" during their recovery, which could be due to the anesthetic medicines wearing off, a lack of sleep, activity limits, or discomfort. If you're starting to feel discouraged, focus on the end result and how amazing you'll look and feel.

After the braest lift

During your follow-up visit on the first or second day after your breast lift, your surgeon will remove the bandages and any drains. The doctor will also examine the color and blood supply of the nipple.

Expect to be uncomfortable for a few days after the operation. Wearing a bra or having a specific dressing in place to provide the support you'll need during your recovery is normally recommended by your doctor. You may require pain medication for the first week.

If you have breast implants, avoid any impact on your chest, as this may cause the implant to rupture.

Your surgeon will remove all of your stitches in 2 to 3 weeks. As time goes on, the size and shape of the breasts will improve.

There may be minor symmetry deviations between the two breasts. If this is the case, your plastic surgeon will do a minor touch-up treatment to realign the nipple as needed. Minor changes can be made at a later time.

It's critical to limit your activity as recommended by your surgeon during your recuperation and to report any side effects or issues as soon as possible. Infection is a possibility with any surgery. Permanent loss of sensation in the nipples or breast skin is extremely unusual after breast reduction surgery.
