PCL Reconstruction Surgery

Table of content
PCL reconstruction involves using autograft or allograft or ligament. Like ACL reconstruction, it is done under general anesthesia. The surgeon inserts a small incision in the knee joint. Then using special surgical devices he/she removes the injured PCL and replaces a new material.
PCL reconstruction usually takes between 45 minutes and 2 hours, depending on the complexity of the operation. Most patients experience only mild discomfort when they wake up after a PCL reconstruction.
Typically it takes 12 weeks for graft to bone healing time.
Because ACL reconstruction is a surgical procedure, it carries certain risks, including: bleeding and blood clots, continued knee pain, infection, knee stiffness or weakness, loss of range of motion, improper healing if the graft is rejected by your immune system.
Return to sedentary work in 1 week. Return to heavy work in 6 to 9 months. May return to low impact aerobic exercises (i.e. walking, swimming & cycling) 8 weeks after surgery. The patient must be pain free and have full ROM and strength and no or minimal swelling prior to initiating return to sports activities. Prop your leg on cushions or pillows so your knee is at least 12 inches above your heart for the first three to five days after surgery. Keep your leg elevated if your knee swells or throbs when you are up and about on crutches. Don't put pillows behind your knee because this limits the motion of the knee.
