PRP or Platelet-rich plasma is a special material that accelerates healing after injection. Plasma is a part of your blood that contains specific factors and proteins that will help to make blood clots. Some kinds of proteins have supportive roles in cell growth. Different studies have been done about isolating plasma from blood and concentrating it. Plasma factors will stimulate damaged tissue to grow and build new healthy cells.

Although this kind of treatment has not been definitively proven, most cases were satisfied after injection and suggest others.

What are the purposes of PRP injections?

Experts are trying to use PRP injections across several applications.

Some of these purposes:

Hair loss: skincare experts have injected PRP into a patient's scalp to stimulate hair growth and decrease hair loss. Researches have proved that PRP is one of the brilliant chances to treat androgenic alopecia, which is also known as male pattern baldness.

Tendon injuries:

Tendons are tissues that connect muscles to bones. However, they are very tough and thick bands; they are usually healing slowly after injuries. For treating chronic tendon problems like tennis elbow, Achilles tendonitis at the ankle, and jumper’s knee, or pain in the patellar tendon in the knee PRP is a good treatment.

Osteoarthritis:

Various studies have been done on the effectiveness of PRP on osteoarthritis. Orthopedists have understood that PRP is much more effective than injecting hyaluronic acid (a traditional therapy).

How do you prepare for PRP injections?

However, there are many ways to inject PRP, preparing for all of them is somehow the same. For most of them just local anesthetic is needed which is done by injecting lidocaine in PRP regions. As an example for hair PRP, they inject a local anesthetic which is mixed with the PRP to reduce any discomfort.

PRP injection process:

• A healthcare professional will draw a sample of your blood. The amount of blood depends on the purpose of the PRP. For example, the amount of blood taken for hair PRP and injected into the scalp is about 20 milliliters. This is slightly larger than one teaspoon.

• The blood is placed into a centrifuge. The centrifuge spins around quickly and causes the blood components to separate. The separation process takes about 15 minutes.

• A technologist takes the separated plasma and prepares it for injection into the affected area, depending on PRP regions.

• Specialists will mostly use imaging, such as ultrasound, to pinpoint specific areas for injection, such as the tendon. Your doctor will then inject the PRP into the affected area.

the potential side effects of PRP?

Like all kinds of injections, PRP can have side effects. PRP is autologous, which means it contains substances that come directly from your own body and this reduces the chances for allergic reactions that may happen after treatment.

However, there are risks from the injection itself, including:

• infection

• nerve injuries

• pain at the injection site

• tissue damage

You must discuss these potential risks and side effects with your doctor, as well as the steps your doctor will try to minimize these risks.

What is the recovery time for PRP injections?

The only recommendation after injection is to rest the affected areas. Most patients can continue their daily activities following PRP injections without any problems. As noted above PRP is autologous so patients may not notice an immediate difference after receiving the injections. Whilst, in several weeks or months, you may understand that the area is healing faster or growing more hair than you would have expected if you hadn’t received PRP injections.

How much does PRP cost?

According to the country and the purpose of PRP, the cost of PRP varies. IN San Francisco reports PRP treatments for hair loss cost $900 for one treatment and $2,500 for a set of three treatments. Injections of PRP can cost anywhere from $500 to $1,200 per treatment.
