The digital covid certificate (formerly called Digital Green Certificate) will help to ensure that restrictions currently in place can be lifted in a coordinated manner. With your vaccination certificate, you can go to restaurants, cafes, hotels, cultural events, and even more.
When traveling, the digital covid Certificate holder should, in general, be excused from free movement restrictions: the member States should avoid enforcing additional travel restrictions on the holders of a digital covid certificate unless they are necessary and balanced to safeguard public health.
The EU Digital COVID Certificate carries a QR code with a digital signature to shield it against falsification. When the certificate is checked, the QR code is scanned and the signature verified. Each issuing feature such as a hospital, a test center, or a health authority has its own digital signature key. All of these are stored in a secure database in each country.
The Digital COVID Certificate should ease free movement inside the EU. It will not be a requirement to free movement, which is a primary right in the EU. All EU residents have an essential right to have free movement in the EU and this applies regardless of whether they are vaccinated or not, but there are some cases in which travelers are not allowed to travel, for instance, if a person has received positive covid test results he or she cannot enter another country, considering the danger.
A Digital COVID Certificate includes three different types of COVID-19 certificates regarding if a person has either:
Been vaccinated against covid-19
Received negative covid test results
Recovered from covid-19
Citizens can also request a paper version. Both will have a QR code that contains essential information, as well as a digital signature to make sure the certificate is authentic.
The digital covid certificate contains necessary key information such as name, date of birth, date of issuance, relevant information about vaccine, test, recovery and, a unique identifier. This data remains on the certificate and is not stored or retained when a certificate is verified in another Member State. During this process, no personal data is exchanged. All health data remains with the Member State that issued an EU digital covid Certificate.
In addition:
The certificates will only include a limited set of information that is necessary. All health data remains with the Member State and it is totally safe and private.
Indeed, children can get an EU Digital COVID Certificate. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) gave the authorization to the use of the Biotech Pfizer vaccine for children of 12-15 years old. These certificates could also be received by their parents and it’s valid for children up to their 10th birthday, and for those children that are attending primary school, it can be stored in the parents’ smartphone app.
