FUT Hair Transplant

In a FUT hair transplant, a doctor cuts a strip from the rear of your head and removes individual hair follicles. These follicles are then inserted into the balding elements of your scalp. You can read about Everything About Hair Transplant.

Here’s what your procedure will probably look like:

    1. The surgeon will re-draw your hairline, mark the area needed, and take photographs for your medical record. You may have to take a sedative before surgery. Local anesthesia and numbing cream will be applied to your scalp.
    2. The hair at the donor site, where your hair is removed, will be trimmed to about two millimeters.
    3. The surgeon will cut out the strip of skin with the hair follicles that will be used as a graft. You’ll stay awake during the surgery.
    4. A technician will remove individual hair follicles from the strip and prepare them for transplantation.
    5. The surgeon will close your scalp with sutures.
    6. The hair follicles will then be inserted into the balding parts of your scalp in a pattern that looks natural.
    7. An antibiotic and bandages will be applied to your scalp.

The results usually take 6 to 9 months or maybe even a year to show up.

FUT possible outcomes and side effects

Side effects after FUT are rare. A large blood supply is recommended so that it heals quickly and further prevents infections. Less than 1% of people get infected after the surgery.

Some potential complications of FUT include:

    • Hair looks abnormal
    • Bumps or scarring
    • Inflammation of hair follicles
    • Bleeding
    • Swelling
    • Pain
    • Numbness
    • Cysts

FUT Scarring

The scar will fade throughout time, but it’s not temporary. The size of the scar depends on how many hair follicles were used during the procedure. The scar is generally hidden by your hair, but it may be visible based on your hairstyle.

At Ermateb we can introduce you to experts in this field, who will perform FUT hair transplants with slightly no side effects.

What is an FUE hair transplant?

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) hair transplants are done by taking individual hair follicles out of your skin and implanting them elsewhere on your body. This will make the hair in the new area look thicker.

FUE is called the classic follicular unit transplantation (FUT) technique. This procedure was done by taking an entire piece of skin or scalp along with the follicles and transplanting the skin on the wanted area.

FUE has become more popular than FUT because it’s less likely to lead to a “hair plug” look, where sections of skin or hair don’t match the surrounding areas. It also won’t leave a large scar, whereas a FUT hair transplant will.

Procedure for FUE hair transplant

Here’s how the FUE procedure works:

    1. Your surgeon will shave down the hair in the area where follicles will be removed as well as around the transplant area.
    2. With a micro punch tool, they will remove follicles from your skin.
    3. Your surgeon will then make a series of tiny incisions with a needle or some sharp tool where the extracted follicles will be inserted.
    4. They’ll insert the follicles into the incisions.
    5. Your surgeon will clean and bandage the area for recovery.

FUE recovery

Recovery from FUE is quick. You may have some swelling or discomfort for about 2 days.

Here are some aftercare to maintain the god results that you should follow;

      • Don’t wash your hair or shower for at least 3 days.
      • Use gentle, unscented shampoos for a few weeks once you start washing your hair.
      • Take a couple of days off work to help speed up healing.
      • Don’t comb or brush your new hair for at least 3 weeks and later on brush it gently and slowly.
      • Don’t do any tough physical activity for at least a week after the procedure.

fut vs fue

FUT vs. FUE hair transplant

FUT and FUE both involve transplanting individual hair follicles. During FUT surgery, a surgeon cuts a strip of skin from the back or side of your scalp and then extracts the hair follicles. In FUE surgery, your surgeon will remove individual hair follicles directly from your scalp, rather than first taking a strip of scalp skin, this makes it difficult for larger areas.

FUE is currently the more common surgery. Some of the advantages of FUE include:

      • shorter healing time (1 day)
      • no stitches are required afterward
      • tiny dot scars that are not significant
      • hair from other body parts can be used
      • can be used even if you have poor hair density

Some advantages of FUT include

      • larger areas are easy
      • it can be a better option if you need a large number of hair follicles grafted
      • shorter operative time
      • cheaper surgery
      • Dissection occurs under  microscopy
      • Can be followed by an FUE if needed ( not vice versa, FUE cannot be continued by an FUE hair transplant)

How much does an FUE hair transplant cost?

An FUE hair transplant costs between $4,000 and $15,000 per session. A multiple-session procedure may even cost up to $50,000 or more, while FUT is a cheaper option if you’re on a limited budget. It costs between 4,000 and $10,000. The cost varies depending on how much the hair is extracted and transplanted, how much the surgeons in your area will take, how frequently your surgeon can perform FUE hair transplants, and how experienced your surgeon is.
