A new report indicates that individuals with more than five symptoms during the first week of a SARS-CoV-2 infection are more likely to develop persistent symptoms or long COVID. People with long covid are at increased risk of cardiovascular and respiratory abnormalities.

They found that fatigue, difficulty breathing, muscle pain, nausea, headaches, and loss of smell or taste were among the most common symptoms during the illness. Researchers also frequently observed sleep disorders and mental symptoms, such as memory and concentration problems, in individuals with this condition.

Surprisingly, having only mild symptoms during the acute phase did not prevent the incidence of long illness, although being hospitalized at symptom onset or needing oxygen had associations with an increased risk of long covid. One study also found that individuals revealing more than five symptoms during the first week of the illness had an increased likelihood of developing it.

Patients who have consulted the doctors were told to exercise immediately after their condition stabilizes. Although there are some individuals for whom exercise makes their symptoms worse.

“We need further research for people who do not respond to exercise to explore what might be causing this response and how we can treat these people. Fortunately, there has been a number of studies that have started or are due to start to explore this gap in knowledge, and hopefully, we will have more answers soon.” Dr. Enya Daynes said.

In summary long covid is the term for covid-19 symptoms that continue for weeks or months after the initial infection. People can discuss a treatment plan with a doctor. Taking steps to look after their health and well-being such as by following a healthy diet, getting plenty of rest, and doing gentle exercise — may all help a person manage long COVID.

Medical treatment may be necessary to treat any secondary infections or complications.
