These days people's diet has changed a lot. Most meals contain huge amounts of sugar and carbohydrates. A sedentary lifestyle has become alarming. These reasons made most of the people very fat.

The effects of obesity on health are beyond expectation. There are some serious health conditions that obesity will cause them :

• All causes of death (mortality)
• High blood pressure (hypertension)
• High LDL cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, or high levels of triglycerides (Dyslipidemia)
• Type 2 diabetes
• Coronary heart disease
• Stroke
• Gallbladder disease
• Osteoarthritis (a breakdown of cartilage and bone within a joint)
• Sleep apnea and breathing problems
• Many types of cancers external icon
• Low quality of life
• Mental illness such as clinical depression, anxiety, and other mental disorders8,9
• Body pain and difficulty with physical functioning

Obesity also affects self-confidence and social communications. Researchers have found that it's one of the most important causes of escaping from society and isolation.

Although a sedentary lifestyle and an unhealthy diet are influential causes of obesity, there are lots of unknown reasons that we try to discuss briefly.

1. Community Environment :

People may make decisions based on the environment or community they're living in. As an example, a person chooses not to take a walk or bike to the shopping mall or to work because of a lack of sidewalks or safe bike trails in City centers. Community, home, childcare, school, health care, and workplace settings can all influence daily behaviors and lifestyles. As a result, it is important to create environments that make it easier to engage in physical activities and try for an active lifestyle.

2.Genetics :
Genes give instructions to cells for responding to changes in their inner and outer environment. Variants in several genes may contribute to obesity by increasing hunger and food intake.

Rarely, a clear pattern of inherited obesity within a family is caused by a specific variant of a single gene (monogenic obesity). Genetic changes occur too slowly to be responsible for the obesity epidemic in this century. Notwithstanding, how people respond to an environment that promotes physical inactivity and sedentary and utilizing high-calorie foods prove that genes play an important role in developing obesity.

3. Family History :

Family health history reflects the effects of shared genetics and environment among close relatives. Families cannot change their genes, but they can boost healthy eating habits and physical activity to make risk factors weaker. Those modifications can ameliorate the health of family members—and refine the health history of the next generations.

4. Diseases and Drugs :

Some diseases may command to obesity or gaining weight. These may include Cushing’s disease and polycystic ovary syndrome. Different types of drugs such as steroids and some antidepressants may also induce weight gain. A health care provider or nutritionist can help to learn more about healthy and unhealthy habits and history to identify whether behaviors, illnesses, medications, and/or psychological factors are providing situations to gain weight or making weight loss extremely hard.

How should we understand if we are over weighted?

Body mass index (BMI) is the most useful criterion health advisers and nutritionists utilize. Having too much body fat may cause harmful and dangerous effects on body health, so BMI is used as a screening tool to make monitoring easier and more advantageous.
More than one-third of industrial community adults have obesity, which is defined as having a BMI greater than 30.

As is the case with adults, the obesity rate among children is too high and this is getting worse annually. Studies have found out that children with obesity are much more likely to have obesity as adults and are at a much greater risk for health problems like diabetes and hypertension now and later during their life.

How to calculate BMI ?
BMI = kg/m2
The healthy range is 18.5 to 24.9. BMI applies to most adults 18-65 years.

According to the BMI criteria, some different stages are defined for obesity :
• Overweight (not obese), if BMI is 25.0 to 29.9.
• Class 1 (low-risk) obesity, if BMI is 30.0 to 34.9.
• Class 2 (moderate-risk) obesity, if BMI is 35.0 to 39.9.
• Class 3 (high-risk) obesity, if BMI is equal to or greater than 40.0.

The prognosis of health conditions is related to the classification of obesity. Higher health problems may occur in high stages.

Which communities are at high risk of obesity?

Certain populations tend to have higher rates of obesity. Overweight and obesity are often accompanied by other chronic health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, certain cancers, and arthritis.

Rural populations with a higher risk of obesity include those who are:

  • Age 60 and above
  • Low-income
  • Caucasians living in Appalachia
  • Latino migrant farmworkers
  • American Indians/Alaska Natives (AI/AN) living on reservations
  • African-Americans living in the south
