Gum lift is a method in which a dental professional reshapes gum tissue by cutting or removing excess gum tissue around teeth. commonly It is used for people who have gum recession (it is a condition in which your gums pull back from the tooth surface). This method is used for both cosmetic purposes (the beauty of the appearance of teeth and gums) and therapeutic purposes such as solving the problem of gum recession.

Usually, patients use this treatment to deform the gums and have a more beautiful smile. However, the other patients experience it as part of other essential periodontal procedures to improve the overall health of their mouth and teeth. If you want to know about Tooth Reshaping, you can read this article.

You may have some questions about this method so let's see the answers!

Does gum lift have different types?

Yes, there are five types of gum lift that you can use for cosmetic purposes or therapeutic purposes:

  1. Gingival Flap Surgery:
It is for cleaning the roots of a tooth and repairs bone damage caused by gum disease (diseases caused by the growth of bacteria present in plaque).

In this procedure, the specialist separates the gums from the teeth to clean the root, and then returns it to its original place, around the tooth. sometimes bone reshaping is required for surgery.
  2. Gingivectomy:
Gingivectomy is a long-established procedure for the removal of excess and overgrown gum tissue. it can be used when supra bony pockets(a structure with a base coronal to the alveolar bone) are present and there is not any necessity to have access to osseous structures (bone tissue) and it is not important. The procedure facilitates decreasing gum tissue for enlargement and altering fibrotic gum.

But there are two conditions in which this method should not be used at all:
    (1) access to osseous structure is important
    (2) gum connection is inadequate or absent
  3. Gingivoplasty:
This procedure is for reshaping the gums' appearance. It is also called "gum recontouring".
a gummy smile, " Having too-long gums on the front teeth" can be solved with gingivoplasty.
it is noteworthy that Gingivoplasty goes along with bone recontouring, which is also known as crown lengthening.
    Gingivoplasty is done as follows:
The tissue is separated from the periosteal surface, mainly in the labial flap, till it is much less than 3 mm thick. That is why a gingivoplasty can be done If considerable attached tissue is present inside the palatal area of the maxillary implants.
  4. Gum Graft:
A gum graft is used to fix the effects of gum recession .this quick and relatively simple surgery method is performed by removing healthy gum tissue from the roof of the mouth and Regeneration of the gums where it has receded.
As mentioned earlier Gum recession occurs when gum tissue diminishes so a large part of the tooth at the root displays. This may cause sensitivity, especially while eating or drinking hot or cold foods. Because the gum recession is a slow process, it is hard to realize.

There are three types of Gum Graft:
Connective tissue graft: It's the most common type of gum graft. It is by applying donor connective tissue from just underneath the surface of the roof of the mouth.

Free gingival graft: it is also by using donor tissue but this tissue is from the roof of the mouth. One of its advantages is that can be used for people with thin gums that require more care.
Pedicle graft: in this type, donor tissue is from the area around an adjacent tooth. This method will only be used when adequate healthy gum tissue exists in the region.
  5. gum regeneration:
The gum tissue doesn't regenerate the way other types of tissue like the epithelial tissue of your skin does. As a result, this generation requires contributing factors for growth so it is done as follows:
Gum tissue shrinks back and bacteria are removed. The surgeon puts bone grafts, membranes, or tissue-stimulating factors (proteins) to help the gum tissues grow.

Is Gum Contouring Painful?

You won't feel pain while the doctor is working on your mouth because You will receive local anesthesia before the operation. But you will probably only be numb for a while afterward, after the procedure is over and the anesthesia is gone, you will probably experience pain and discomfort. While a scalpel can be used to do the operation, most doctors choose a laser or electrocautery.

Depended on how much of your gums had to be changed or removed, The amount of discomfort will be different.

After surgery, your doctor may prescribe painkillers, or you can take OTC pain medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil). Because aspirin can cause bleeding, your doctor may stop taking this medicine.

You can also use ice packs or cold compresses to reduce pain and swelling for a few days after surgery. It is best to use the compress for 15 to 20 minutes.

Here are some other ways to reduce postoperative pain:

    1. To reduce and eliminate bleeding, put gauze to the area, being careful not to place the gauze on top of the area, but next to it.
    2. Do not brush or use mouthwash for 24 hours
    3. Do not pull out your lip to see the sore
    4. Avoid strenuous activity for 3-7 days
    5. Do not put your tongue in the area
    6. Avoid brushing your gums for a month after hearing the surgery site. When resuming brushing, be sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and use gentle movements
    7. Avoid hot drinks and foods for two to three days, and use a soft diet in the first week and slowly ingest harder foods.

Is a gum lift permanent?

usually, gum lift has permanent results and many patients do not need to be done again because the bone underneath gums

usually, the gums tissue do not grow again. But as a precaution and to keep your mouth healthy it is better to clean your teeth routinely, you should maintain good oral care, reducing nervous habits, such as nail and pen chewing, Avoid ice, and schedule regular dental appointments.

the patient may need additional treatment to obtain the complete result. It often takes a few weeks for the gums to heal completely, but once the healing process is complete, patients can often continue to eat without any special restriction.

How much does gum lift cost?

The average cost of a gingival lift or gingival contouring is $ 2,000 and can range from $ 200 to $ 3,000. However, depending on the treatment process required. The cost of gingival contouring depends on many factors and varies from person to person. Some cost factors include expertise, degree of practice, and location. There is no set cost for deformed gums because it is customized for each patient.

There are some other costs:

The cost to shape and remove the gum around a tooth can range from $50 to $350. The cost for gum contouring that includes damage or overgrowth around the teeth can vary n cost. The cost for contouring includes crown lengthening, which includes extensive gum reshaping and the removal of the bone and gum tissue that can range from $1000 to $3000 more or less depending on the labor and expertise.

Is this surgery appropriate for you?

Same as the other surgeries it has risks and benefits:

Positive points:

1-Makes your smile monotonous :

building symmetrical teeth is one of the most important aspects of this effective smile change surgery. Take a closer look to see if your teeth are uneven or if they are actually your gum line. The uneven edges of the gums can create the illusion that your teeth are different in size and make your overall smile look uneven and asymmetric. Gum lift on special teeth can easily straighten your gum line and solve this problem.

2- Helps teeth look longer and fuller:

if your teeth have a lot of gums that cover the anatomical crown (the part that is usually visible above the gums), lifting the tissue will naturally make your teeth look bigger and fuller.

3- It can be completed with a laser:

In the past, gum lift removal was a semi-surgical, invasive procedure. Fortunately, now Soft tissue laser treatment makes this process simple and more practical. The laser technology is FDA that protects the edges of gums and it means that there is virtually no bleeding or swelling, as is common with older gingival surgery techniques. The laser decreases discomfort and takes less time to become complete.

Risks of Gum Lift:

    1. it is best to cover it completely with gum tissue because if the roots of the teeth become apparent, you will no longer cover the dense layer of tooth enamel completely as a result, the next layer of the tooth, known as dentin is exposed. Dentin is much more sensitive than tooth enamel.
    2. Every time you remove the gum tissue to expose more surface of your teeth, you face the risk of potential allergies. Teeth can be very sensitive, depending on which part of the structure is exposed. All teeth are made up of thousands of tiny cavities called tubes that house the nerve endings. If those tubes are covered and suddenly discovered, they may hit the tooth slightly. Fortunately, treatment with time and sensitivity can help fight the symptoms.
    3. As a result of this surgery, dentin is more at risk for tooth decay. This is why exposed roots should be covered with a gingival graft or some kind of sticky filler. If your gum lift reaches the point where its anatomical roots appear, you should discuss the best game plan with our Long Island dentists.

Finally…

A gum lift is an appropriate method for reshaping gum for therapeutic and cosmetic aims. It is often safe, especially if done by a skillful professional.
