Selena Gomez is an American singer, actress, businesswoman, and producer who had lupus. This is an autoimmune disease; it means that the immune system that normally protects you from illness doesn’t function well and ends up attacking the healthy cells. This disease can lead to damage to the kidneys or other organs such as the heart, lungs, or even brain. Selena Gomez’s kidney transplant was the case when the disease damaged her kidney. Lupus affects millions of people worldwide. Its symptoms are:

1.Fatigue

2.Muscle pain

3.Joint pain

4.Joint swelling

5.Fever

6.A red rash on the face

7.Skin lesions that worsen with sun exposure

8.Shortness of breath

9.Chest pain

10.Dry eyes

11.Headaches, confusion, and memory loss

In 2017, Selena Gomez revealed that she had a kidney transplant due to her disease.  Her friend, Francia Raisa, donated one of her kidneys to Gomez. The surgery was successful, but Selena had some complications following the procedure. The new kidney started turning around inside her body and therefore she had to go back to the operating room.

After that, Selena Gomez and her friend Francia Raisa recovered well and then shared their story to raise awareness and support for lupus and organ donation. In addition, Gomez has spoken about how the transplant affected her mental health and body image. She said she’s grateful for her second chance at life.

Some people may think that kidney disease only affects individuals as they age. But this is not true. Except for diabetes and high blood pressure that can lead to kidney disease, many other types of kidney disease can cause kidney failure in younger people.

According to some research, about 1.5 million people in the United States are living with lupus. Many doctors and experts believe the cause of lupus disease is a combination of environmental and genetic factors. In about 1 in 2 individuals with this disease, the kidneys are affected, which is called lupus nephritis.

Lupus disease is diagnosed by a combination of urine tests, blood tests, physical examination, and medical history. Unfortunately, there is no cure for lupus, but treatments can help the patient control the symptoms and prevent complications and side effects. Some of the treatments include:

1.Anti-inflammatory medicines, like ibuprofen or naproxen

2.Steroids, including prednisone or methylprednisolone

3.Antimalarial drugs, like hydroxychloroquine

4.Immunosuppressants, like azathioprine or cyclophosphamide

5.Biologics, including belimumab or rituximab

Lupus can range from mild to intense, and the disease can have periods of flare-ups and remissions. Individuals with lupus can have a normal life with proper care and management. Some of the things that patients can do to cope with lupus disease are:

1.Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors

2.Avoid smoking and alcohol

3.Eat a balanced diet and drink plenty of water

4.Manage stress and practice relaxation techniques

5.Exercise regularly

6.Get enough rest
