It can take up to six weeks for the bones in the ankle to heal after surgery but can take several months to a year of healing to regain full motion in the ankle.

Possible complications include: Infection, Bleeding, Nerve damage, Skin complications, Blood clots, Fat embolism, Bone misalignment, Irritation of the overlying tissue from the hardware.

Pre and Post-Operative bans

After the surgery, After ankle surgery, you'll probably need to be non-weight bearing for at least six weeks. Plan on doing nothing more than resting and elevating your limb for the first two weeks after your surgery. Keep your cast or bandage dry and do not change it. Resume your normal medications, unless directed otherwise. Take your pain medications as directed. Most people use crutches after ankle surgery but other mobility devices to consider include a knee scooter and hands-free crutch.

The materials used to construct ankle joints are usually Co–Cr alloy and UHMWPE. Degeneration of the ankle joint is currently treated with fusion of the joint since prostheses for total ankle replacement are considered to be still under initial development.
